REVIEW: Fibre's 2014-2016 (2017)

Released on Brighton based label Savona in early 2017 and classic Hong Kong label Neoncity in April 2019, Fibre's only compilation album to date comprising of various singles has since been regarded as a future funk classic and is heavily praised for its unique sound, production style and eclectic, interesting ideas.

This album is how I came across the Romanian producer's work a few years ago while looking for new things to bump - and since then it has been a staple in my listening for a variety of different reasons, all of which will be explained in this review.

Throughout the twelve tracks featured, Fibre is able to demonstrate with ease his instantly recognizable style of production, complete with dominating melodies and exciting yet wistfully nostalgic ideas, pieced together with hard hitting beats and an irresistible club-fueled nature.

This is predominantly evidenced throughout tracks such as "Don't Stop" and "My Lady" (respectively tracks one and nine on the compilation) and judging by the style of these tracks, Fibre attempts to go for a sound reminiscent of french house in the early 2000s, which is done extremely well.

Along with this, the album is perfect for a variety of different scenarios - whether it's a fun day in the sun going to the beach, or even just staying in your bedroom dancing and getting some exercise, thanks to the album's upbeat, bright nature and the usage of pitched up samples, you can bump this basically anywhere and it can shift your mood drastically (and trust me, this has worked!)

The most well known song on the album is 2015's "Supernatural" which was featured on legendary promotion channel Artzie Music almost nine years ago. It currently has an impressive 790,000 streams on Spotify and after being featured in a DJ mix by Squad Goals, has almost six million views on YouTube, becoming a landmark song for future funk and ultimately leading to praise from seminal producers alike.

It's been my favorite song of Fibre's for almost three years now due to the fact that it exemplifies everything I love about future funk as a whole - the funky feel, the sweet percussive loops and the fantastic samples all together create a song which I still consider to be absolutely wonderful.

One of the reasons I chose to review this album in particular is purely because the whole album feels like that in its own right, which is definitely something great to have in a collection of songs, particularly in this day and age where heaps of unreleased, unfinished and filler material can make its way on to the net.

Overall, in my opinion this album is wonderful and despite the fact that some of the songs are not particularly to my taste, looking at the compilation from a production standpoint, this is an incredible body of work and I strongly recommend it.

Rating - 9/10
