REVIEW: Skylar Spence's Prom King (2015)

Image
Released in September 2015 after a string of successful singles and an appearance on the Polyvinyl label in June, Skylar Spence's debut album is a fantastically produced debut oozing with nostalgia, upbeat tonality and brilliant writing.  The first album length release from Ryan DeRobertis since his stellar long player Hit Vibes under the moniker SAINT PEPSI, this release under acclaimed label Carpark has since become flagship for not only DeRobertis himself but also the underground future funk and pop scenes, with hits such as Fiona Coyne amassing an incredible 21 million streams on Spotify and instrumental grooves such as "Bounce is Back" having 2 and a half million streams since the album's release. This album shows DeRobertis stepping in new directions for his music with the welcome addition of him singing - establishing the New York based producer as a sampling god, a fantastic singer-songwriter and producer. Examples of this are littered throughout the album, ...

ARTISTS YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT: Jeesh

Image
Based in the UK, multi genre artist and musician Jeesh has become one of my favorite artists of this month for a multitude of different reasons. His music employs various different techniques and ideas from a multitude of sources such as other genres of music, films, television shows, his Gameboy and... cereal jars. No, I'm actually being completely serious. To add to this, he is able to produce a heavy mix of stuff, ranging from drum and bass, dreampop, glitch house, hip hop and plunderphonics. Oh, and remixes of various things such as the first generation of Pokemon games.  Thanks to the upbeat, positive vibe a lot of his music is able to emit with complete ease, you can stick on a few of his tunes after a hard day at school or work and feel relaxed, pumped or just happy. Along with this, his music is perfect for a lot of different occasions - deep, glitchy house grooves such as "Holding You" are fit for parties and fun scenarios. He himself stated that the track remi...

INTERVIEW: FTC Project

Image
Hey everyone! I recently decided to interview Michigan based rave producer FTC Project for this blog. For those that don't know, he is becoming a popular name in the underground tracker music scene with his eclectic taste for sounds and interesting production. For now, I'll let him do the talking. Q: For those that don't know, what music do you make? A:  I make a mix of jungle and breakbeats with a bit of gabber and speedcore. Q: What got you into making music in particular? Are there any particular artists that have inspired you? A: In around 2021, I started listening to acid house and hardcore hechno and I also knew a few gabber tracks before I listened to a few pirate radio mixtapes that had jungle/breakbeats on there. Around this time I was already experimenting on FL Studio making acid house when I discovered the jungle genre and then I started to make jungle music in FL Studio which resulted in the first dreaded Fritz The Cat EPs later in 2022. Eventually the name wa...

REVIEW: Saint Pepsi's Hit Vibes (2013)

Image
Released on legendary netlabel KEATS//COLLECTIVE on May 31st 2013, Saint Pepsi's seventh solo album has since been retrospectively critically acclaimed in the vaporwave / future funk scene and generally regarded as one of the defining long players in helping vaporwave evolve significantly. Before this release, Saint Pepsi had been putting out vaporwave albums all of which oozed a chilled, experimental and interesting nature. Examples of this include Triumph International (released in December 2012) and Studio 54 (released in March 2013) These excursions into sample based work would ultimately prove to become a basis for Hit Vibes along with numerous disco, funk and city pop records. Combined together, this creates an incredible listening experience filled with joy, funk and just the right amount of downtime with chilled tracks sprinkled in too. The album opens with a string of disco infused, party ready tracks (Hit Vibes, Have Faith, Better and Cherry Pepsi) which echo the produc...

Welcome to my blog!

Hello everyone! I am Hackurr, a teenager from somewhere who wants to write about music as a hobby. I've been writing for a few years now and along with that, I really enjoy making and listening to music in my spare time, so the thought of starting a blog relating to both of those things seems like something I would really enjoy doing, hence this page. Expect lots of things that are musically related on this page - reviews, new music, old music, music production or just the odd funny thing here and there relating to organised noise. I can't wait to get started on this little project and I hope you will enjoy what's coming.
